This past week I traveled to Texas for the World Positive Education Accelerator Summit in Fort Worth. I had the opportunity to try many incredible restaurants during my visit. But, the one that I will be reviewing today is Babe’s Chicken Dinner House in Roanoke, Texas!
This happens to be the original location before nine other sister restaurants throughout Texas were founded. The restaurant is BYOB, so we did bring along some Spoetzl Brewery Shiner Strawberry Blonde with us which is a beer native to Shiner, Texas.
It is light, fruity, refreshing, smells and tastes just like Strawberries! If you’re not a big fan of really hoppy or heavy beers, I recommend trying this one out! I was able to find it at my small local liquor store in Shelburne, Vermont when I came home from the conference.
I would assume that you can probably find this brand anywhere in the United States but you can also use the store locator on their website. They send out 6 million cases of beer throughout the United States each year, so you’re bound to find it somewhere near you.
Babe’s Chicken Dinner House was (in my humble opinion) the quintessential fried chicken dinner house, despite the limited options at this location in particular. The food was so good! They offer a choice of chicken fried steak or fried chicken, both of which were out of this world. The chicken was buttery, high-quality, super crisp, golden brown and fresh out of the fryer (as it should be).
At Babe’s Chicken Dinner House you’ll also get unlimited sides which makes it a great place to go with a large group of friends or family. The sides that they offer are buttermilk biscuits, creamed corn, mashed potatoes, and gravy. The only thing that I wasn’t so keen on was the creamed corn because I have a recipe that I think is much better.
The buttermilk biscuits, on the other hand, were borderline addictive. They were incredibly fresh, hot, light and delicious–literally the best biscuit of my whole entire life. I’m currently on the search for a comparable recipe and will keep you updated when I find it! The mashed potatoes and gravy were also superb, creamy and peppered to perfection.
This style of food is so satisfying, comforting and traditional. While it is not such a diet-friendly option, I’m a big believer of everything in moderation. A word of caution, I would anticipate at least a 25-minute wait especially on a Friday or the weekends, but that’s to be expected with most restaurants anyway.
Just sit back, relax and enjoy your beer, you won’t feel like you were waiting long at all.
The service is extremely fast and the management runs the restaurant like a well-oiled machine. They got our party in and out in what felt like a record destroying time. I wholehearted recommend giving this place a shot if you’re in the Fort Worth, Texas area or if you’re just craving some seriously delicious southern comfort food!
