This is the fifth post in my “Greenwashing Series” where I talk about the good and the bad in the beauty industry. Stay tuned for product reviews based on product trial periods of 30+ days—my hair type is dry, thick, and it’s currently at about shoulder length.

The Honest Company was started 7 years ago by Jessica Alba and under this parent company is the Honest Beauty brand. Honest Beauty has been very popular in the clean beauty community as its products are formulated without toxic ingredients like SLS/SLES, Parabens, Phthalates, and “known formaldehyde donors.” Their products are also free of dyes and synthetic fragrances too.
I was pretty stoked to discover that my local Costco carries the Honest Beauty Everyday Gentle Shampoo + Body Wash! This includes a pack of Honest Beauty wipes and two bottles of the shampoo + wash. I thought that this was a pretty good deal considering you get 34 ounces of product and the wipes for $14.99.
I researched each of the ingredients via EWG before I made a purchase. I didn’t find any ingredients in the formulation that was cause for concern to the environment or to your health. This is something about this product and this brand that I really appreciate.
I use lots of products throughout the week including heat protectant, dry shampoo, leave-in conditioners, and serums. I try to only wash my hair 3 to 4 times per week and use a shower cap every other day.
I took about 2 pumps of the shampoo once my hair was wet. The shampoo smells like a delicious orange creamsicle (it’s sweet orange vanilla scented). This fragrance only lasts for about 30 seconds until it fades and is completely gone.
This product did not form a good lather, I added 2 more pumps and it still didn’t produce a rich lather. I used 2 more pumps and then just gave up. I realized it wouldn’t form a rich lather.
This product is really weird though, sometimes it will lather more than others. I think that it might be dependent on how much product you’ve used in your hair prior to washing it, but it’s really bizarre…
You can also use this product as a body wash which is very gentle on my sensitive and eczema-prone skin. This product will not, however, leave a fragrance which isn’t a super big deal for me. I generally prefer good ingredients to the smell of the product.
I do love that this product has a pump and that the ingredients are non-toxic but that’s about it. I went through half of the bottle in a little over a month trying to get it to work for me and it didn’t. I really wanted to like this product. I’m honestly pretty bummed that it did not work out!
What are your thoughts? Have to tried this shampoo + body wash duo? I’d love to hear from you. 💜👇
